PRESS RELEASE

MEETING BETWEEN THE MINISTER OF DIGITAL POLICY, TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND MEDIA, N.PAPPAS AND THE EU COMMISIONER FOR DIGITAL ECONOMY AND SOCIETY, M. GABRIEL – SIGNING OF THE CONTRACT BETWEEN THE S.G. OF DIGITAL POLICY AND OTE ON DIGITAL SIGNATURE

  • Gabriel: “E-government is an important tool to the strengthening of trust, Democracy and security. In the EU we believe that the modernization of public services depends on their digitalization”.
  • Pappas: “The Project of Digital Document Management with embedded signatures upgrades citizens’ relations with public services and improves the quality of our Democracy. Our aim is to bring ’Tomorrow into Today and for All”.

Minister of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media, Nikos Pappas, received today in his ministry the EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society  Mariya Gabriel in a face to face meeting to discuss the actions and projects planned and implemented by the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media. An immediate meeting was held with the participation of M. Gabriel’s associates and the Secretary Generals of Digital Policy, Stelios Rallis, of Communication Lefteris Kretsos and of Posts and Telecommunications Vasilis Maglaras, as well as the special advisor to the minister, George Christophorides.

After the conclusion of the meeting and on the occasion of the visit of the Commissioner, followed the launching of the ministry’s project titled “Document and Workflows Digital Management System, with embedded remote digital signatures”. The launching was made by the S.G OF Digital Policy, Stelios Rallis and by the OTE President and CEO, Mihalis Tsamaz.

The Minister of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media, Nikos Pappas,  thanking the Commissioner for choosing Greece as the first country she visits after assuming  her duties, said: “Visits and their protocol formalities are important, however they alone cannot change our societies. It is particularly crucial that they are combined with essential projects. The project of Digital Document Management with embedded remote signatures upgrades citizens’ relations with the public services and improves the quality of our Democracy. For us, this is an essential element of our digital policy: projects accessible to all citizens without any discrimination. Because technology without people is eventually a useless technology. We will have achieved nothing unless civil servants, businesses and Greek citizens are all trained to participate in the implementation of new technologies. Our aim is to bring ’Tomorrow into Today and for All’.

The EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Mariya Gabriel, congratulated the Minister of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media, Nikos Pappas, the general secretariat of Digital Policy and everyone who worked on the implementation of the project stressing: “I address my congratulations and encouragement for the implementation of the important project of digitalization”.   She added that the digitalization should not be an end in itself.  The aim is the implementation of realistic projects, which save money and reinforce the faith of citizens in digital services and contribute to the improvement of their daily lives. The e-government is an important key to the strengthening of trust, of Democracy and security. In the European Union we believe that the modernization of public services is depended on their digitalization”.

The Secretary General of Digital Policy, Stelios Ralis, said:  “Today is a milestone for the public sector, as we take the first and essential step for its digitalization.  This project will simplify significantly and accelerate   the functioning of public administration, while saving money.  Also, it will considerably improve the citizen’s daily lives.  It’s important to note that the cost of the project is very low, lower 60.000 Euros and is expected to be amortized within the first month of its implementation. The project is being piloted in the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media with the prospect of it being gradually implemented in the other ministries and local authorities”.  Afterwards, Stelios Ralis demonstrated the system of digital document management and signed the contract for the launching of the implementation with the OTE contractor.

OTE President and CEO, Mihalis Tsamaz, declared:"Undertaking this project, OTE confirms its experience and his technical know-how in major projects which meet the needs of the new digital era. The Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media makes an example for all the public sector, showing the way towards development through technology".
